Transgender people will be able to apply for jobs in Tamil Nadu’s police force, after a recent government order cleared the decks. According to the government order issued for appointment of 13,137 police constables, transgender personnel will be able to apply under the category of male, female, or third gender. According to The Hindu, those opting for “third gender” would be under the female category for educational qualifications, physical fitness and reservation.

“This is the first time that we will be formally inducting them in the police department. The notification is expected in a month and the recruitment completed by December,” a senior police officer told The Hindu.

This makes Tamil Nadu the first state to allow transgender people in police force.
