In a progressive move, the provincial Government of Sindh, Pakistan, has hired three transgender persons as full time employees who will be serving in Women Development Department. Although, hailed as a first of its kind decision, it is also important to note that few transgender persons have already been working in Tax Department for a while on part time/contract basis. This latest move comes on the back of incremental progress in the rights and status of Pakistan’s significant transgender community.
After the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in 2009, which recognized the transgender persons as ‘third gender’, issuing of Computerized National identity Cards (CNICs) in 2013 and participation of the community members as candidates and voters, this step is momentous for a nation battling with countless human rights violations
