Sher Vancouver has launched Safar with Pride, a groundbreaking Desi Queer Learning Hub aimed at fostering unity, understanding, and acceptance within the South Asian LGBTQ+ community. This initiative marks a significant step in addressing the challenges of rising anti-SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) sentiments, homophobia, and transphobia in South Asian and broader communities.

A Journey of Empowerment

The name “Safar,” meaning journey in several South Asian languages, encapsulates the platform’s mission to support and celebrate the diverse experiences of queer South Asians. Safar with Pride aspires to create a nurturing digital space where community members can connect, learn, and thrive.

Mission and Vision

Safar with Pride is dedicated to cultivating a supportive digital environment that champions the diverse experiences of the queer South Asian community. It seeks to promote acceptance, understanding, and unity while honoring the rich cultural and LGBTQ+ heritage.

The platform envisions a world where every queer South Asian lives authentically, free from discrimination and prejudice. By celebrating vibrant identities and stories, Safar with Pride aims to integrate these narratives as a vital part of cultural heritage.

Core Values

Safar with Pride is built on six foundational values:

  • Inclusivity: Embracing the full spectrum of queer identities within the South Asian community.
  • Cultural Pride: Celebrating the intersection of South Asian cultures, traditions, and LGBTQ+ experiences.
  • Empowerment: Providing resources and support for queer South Asians to embrace their true selves.
  • Education: Promoting awareness and understanding of the challenges and strengths of queer South Asians.
  • Intersectionality: Acknowledging the complexities of identities shaped by race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality.
  • Advocacy: Championing the rights, well-being, and representation of the queer South Asian community.

A Treasure Trove of Resources

“Safar with Pride holds a treasure trove of resources, from stories of queer South Asian icons to crucial information and support for refugees. Our goal is to offer easily accessible information empowering community members to learn about the queer South Asian community and the issues faced by many sexual and gender minorities,” said Alex Sangha, Founder of Sher Vancouver.

The platform provides:

  • Inspirational stories of queer South Asian figures.
  • Educational materials on LGBTQ+ issues.
  • Resources for refugees and marginalized groups.
  • Support for community members to embrace their identities.

Community-Driven Initiative

The Safar with Pride project is funded by a grant from the UBC Centre for Community Engaged Learning – Student Affairs, underscoring the importance of collective efforts in supporting the South Asian LGBTQ+ community.
