A 2013 video of newly sworn in Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath, where he welcomes the Supreme Court verdict reinstating Section 377, has gone viral over social media. In the video, Yogi Adityanath says that the judgement of Supreme Court is very important and worth welcoming. “Homosexuality is bad for the society and if there are no social boundaries left, then there is no difference left between a man and an animal. And in my view, such a ‘ghatiya’ (lowly) thing should not even be associated with any religious text. What is unnatural is unnatural. What one does in his bedroom, should neither get any social nor legal sanction or recognition. Supreme Court’s order is extremely important for the society, and it should be welcome,” he can he heard saying in the video.
Yogi Adityanath has been in controversy in the past for his hate speeches against the muslim community. According to a report in scroll.in, charges against him include attempt to murder, criminal intimidation, rioting, promoting enmity between different groups and defiling place of worship.
