Indian government has said that there are no plans to provide reservations to the transgender community in educational institutions or government jobs.
Legal website Bar and Bench reported that Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thawarchand Gehlot, while responding to a question regarding reservations for transgender community, said : “The Ministry does not have any data on the number of Transgender working in Public Services and there is NO proposal for providing reservation to the Transgender persons in Educational institutes and Government jobs.”
Reservations in jobs and education has been one of the demands of the transgender community. However, the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill 2019 does not has any provision for reservations for the community. There were reports in the media last year which said that the Education Ministry was considering providing reservation to the transgender community in higher education.
