Even as the country is in the middle of festivities, the Supreme Court witnessed a significant change this week, with Justice H.L. Dattu taking over as the Chief Justice of India. As the 42nd Chief Justice of India, he will remain at the helm of the Indian judiciary till December 2, 2015. He was one of the two judges who upheld Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code recriminalizing consensual homosexuality and set aside a landmark 2009 Delhi High Court order on December 11, 2013. Some in the queer community are wondering what that implies at a time when the curative petition on the Supreme Court judgment is up for hearing.
