Delhi University has decided to introduce admission forms with a separate category for transgenders in postgraduate courses this year. Similar admission forms will be given out for undergraduate admissions from next year.
The university has decided to include any transgender applicant under a special section of the other backward classes quota. Nine of the 90,000 applicants this year are transgender, who will be admitted under the OBC quota.
The move has been welcomed by queer rights activists, who called it a forward step in ensuring equal treatment for tran speople in all walks of life. Some, however, raised concern over the inclusion of trans people in the OBC quota, saying it would be beneficial to neither.
