Top political parties are slowly coming out of the closet, at least in terms of providing choice to third/other genders in their membership forms.
The lead in this genre is expectedly taken by the two political parties who came out strongly against the Supreme Court verdict upholding Section 377. The Congress, whose top leaders spoke out against the verdict, provides a third option ‘other’ under the gender category in their membership form.
The Aam Aadmi Party too isn’t far behind. The political greenhorn, which came out with a statement denouncing the Supreme Court verdict, provides a similar third option under the gender category in its membership form too.
Predictably, though, the BJP, which had come out in strong support of Section 377, doesn’t provide any such option. For ‘the party with a difference’, gender still means binaries.
