Mahila Maha Vidhyalaya, a women’s college of Benaras Hindu University, has asked an undergraduate student to leave the girls hostel for her “homosexual tendencies”. According to college authorities, the girl was suspended from the hostel to “maintain peace and discipline”.
When Gaylaxy contacted chief coordinator of the five hostels Prof. Neelam Atri, who took the disciplinary action- she refused to comment on the issue telling that it was a sensitive and internal matter, and asked us to write to the college Principal instead as she was not authorised to speak. A mail sent to Dr. Sandhya Singh Kaushik has remained unanswered, and when we contacted her, she disconnected the call asking to speak to the warden instead.
However, Prof Atri told Indian Express:“Around 16 boarders had given me in writing that the student was harassing them and scaring them with her activities and indiscipline. The student was also threatening fellow boarders with suicide if they did not yield to her demands.”
Another professor told Indian Express that the students had submitted written complaints against her, telling that her behaviour was making them uncomfortable. “The tendencies she was showing were at a nascent stage. We cannot really pin-point if it is really homosexuality. But we had to suspend her to maintain peace and discipline in the hostel.”
