Every year, over 1 million people between the ages of 15 and 49 contract a sexually transmitted infection or STI. The term sexually transmitted disease or STD refers to the result of bacteria or viruses entering the body through sexual contact – the symptoms resulting from the initial infection.
Though many STIs are curable, four may result in a life of ongoing treatment and recurrent outbreaks: herpes simplex virus (HSV), human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B, and HIV. Fortunately, STIs are highly preventable by taking simple steps.
