The much awaited trailer of the Bollywood movie Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan starring Ayushmann Khurrana has just been released on Youtube. The movie is a gay love story between Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitu K and will be releasing on 21st February.
The trailer begins with Ayushmann being asked the question, “When did you become gay?” and the actor replying back sternly with his own question, “When did you decide not to become gay?” Going by the trailer, the movie will not just be a love story between two men, but will also showcase the many hardships faced by gay men in India, including family pressure to get married to a girl. The trailer also recreates the famous scene from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge of Kajol grabbing the hand of Shah Rukh to get onto a train, except this time it is a gay couple.
This is the 2nd same-sex love story from Bollywood in two years. Last year in February, Ek Ladki ko Dekha toh Aisa Laga portrayed a lesbian love story and was appreciated by all for its sensitive portrayal of the issue. This is a welcome change from previous movies, where gay characters, even when sensibly portrayed, always played a side character or supporting character.
