In spite of all the Telangana fever that has gripped the city, the queer community of Hyderabad will be walking their annual Pride march this Sunday on Feb 23rd, 2014. This will be the 2nd Pride of Hyderabad and the 3rd one in India after the Supreme Court Judgment (the first one was held in Mumbai and the next one in Guwahati).
“Despite the recent detrimental developments in queer activism across India, we still walk with pride. This is symbolic of our strong will that our fight for equal rights will not end, ” says the Queer Campus Hyderabad group.
The march will begin at 1pm from the Hi-Tech City MMTS station and end at Shilpa Kala Vedika and will be followed by various cultural activities and dance performances by community members.
“Our community has been fighting since many years now; we don’t want to extend our fight for another 10 to 15 years. We hope that things will change soon, ” Rajib Mukherjee from Wajood Society added.
What’s unique about this Pride is that it will be followed by a series of cultural events and performances by the community. Navadeep from the community says, “I’ve been to a lot of Prides throughout the country. When we organized our first Pride last year, we wanted to take it one step ahead and make it more than just a walk. We wanted to share the spirit of celebration and we’ll continue to do the same this year inspite of the SC’s verdict. Hence, our Pride will end at Shilpa Kala Vedika followed by entertaining performances.
